Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria and also one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria’s primary city and is by far the largest city in Austria. It is the 9th largest city by population in the European Union. Vienna lies in the east of Austria and is close to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Vorarlberg is the westernmost and wealthiest state of Austria. it borders three countries: Germany (Bavaria), Switzerland (Graubünden and St. Gallen) and Liechtenstein. The only Austrian federal state that shares a border with Vorarlberg is Tyrol to the east. The capital of Vorarlberg is Bregenz.

Tyrol is a state, located in the west of Austria. It comprises the Austrian part of the historical region of Tyrol. The state is split into two parts – called North Tyrol and East Tyrol – by a 20 km-wide strip of land where the state of Salzburg borders directly on the Italian Province of Bolzano-Bozen. North Tyrol borders Bavaria (Germany) in the north, the state of Vorarlberg in the west, Italy and Switzerland in the south and Salzburg in the east. East Tyrol also borders Carinthia in the east.

Styria is a state, located in the southeast of Austria. In area, it is the second largest of the nine Austrian states, covering 16,388 km². It borders Slovenia as well as the other Austrian states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Burgenland, and Carinthia. The capital city is Graz.

With a land area of 19,174 km² and a population of 1.6 million people, it is the largest state in Austria. The state borders on Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and on the other Austrian states of Upper Austria, Styria and Burgenland. The state surrounds Vienna.
